RBD palm stearin is the harder fraction of refined palm oil. Buyers normally evaluate it for fat structure, melting behaviour, soap hardness, handling route, and document fit before they ask for a firm offer.

We write this guide as the export desk at Indonesia Palm. It is for importers, food manufacturers, soap producers, and procurement teams comparing Indonesian RBD palm stearin for margarine, shortening, and oleochemical use.

What is Indonesian RBD palm stearin used for?

RBD palm stearin is used where a buyer needs a harder palm fraction rather than a liquid olein. In practical terms, it is specified for structuring margarine blends, building shortening texture, and supplying hard fat content for soap or oleochemical processing.

The first buying question is not only “Can this oil be used?” It is “Which physical property must the cargo deliver in my plant?” Margarine buyers usually focus on melting behaviour and blend compatibility. Shortening buyers look at plasticity, crystallisation, and finished product texture. Soap manufacturers care about hardness, process stability, and how the material fits their fatty acid or saponification route.

ApplicationWhy buyers use RBD palm stearinMain sourcing check
MargarineTo provide structure in a fat blend that would otherwise be too softMelting point, iodine value, food document requirements
ShorteningTo support body, texture, and heat resistance in bakery or frying fatsMelting profile, colour, FFA, packing format
SoapTo contribute hard fat content in soap or oleochemical intakeFFA, melting point, bulk handling, HS code alignment

RBD palm stearin is not the same buying decision as RBD palm olein. Olein is the more liquid fraction and is commonly discussed for frying or food oil programmes, while stearin is selected when the formulation needs a harder component. If your team is comparing both fractions, our RBD Palm Olein IV56 page gives the liquid fraction limits separately.

How should a buyer specify RBD palm stearin for margarine, shortening, or soap?

Specify the grade by its measurable quality limits, the intended application, the packing route, and the destination document requirements. A quote request that only says “palm stearin CIF” leaves too much open for quality, logistics, and customs review.

Our RBD Palm Stearin is supplied with FFA ≤ 0.1%, iodine value ≤ 48, melting point 42 to 48°C, colour ≤ 3R Lovibond 5¼", minimum order 300 MT, 25 kg PP bags or bulk vessel packing, 2 to 3 weeks lead time from contract, ISO 22000 and Halal BPJPH certification, FOB, CFR, or CIF Incoterms, and HS code 1511.90.

For margarine and shortening, the internal specification should state how your plant will judge incoming cargo. If your formulation needs a tighter melting range than the sales specification, say that before contract review. A food manufacturer may also need Halal BPJPH documentation or a specific wording on the certificate of analysis, depending on the buyer’s quality system and market.

For soap, the request should make clear whether the plant buys bagged stock for batch dosing or bulk cargo for tank intake. Soap buyers often focus on cost-in-use, but handling losses and heating arrangements can change the real landed cost. A cheaper cargo format is not cheaper if the receiving site cannot unload, melt, or store it correctly.

If your team is still comparing hard palm fractions for soap or derivative production, review our oleochemical feedstock palm oil range before asking for allocation.

What is the MOQ and price basis for Indonesian RBD palm stearin?

Our minimum order for RBD Palm Stearin is 300 MT. Price is driven by grade, packing, Incoterm, volume, shipment timing, freight, Indonesian export cost, and the relationship between stearin and broader palm oil market benchmarks at the time of contract.

We do not publish spot prices in an article because palm oil markets move daily. Physical offers are usually built from a palm oil market reference, commonly including Bursa Malaysia Derivatives FCPO as a benchmark, then adjusted for Indonesian origin, product fraction, refining route, packing, freight, shipment month, and seller allocation.

Indonesian export cost can also affect the final offer. Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade publishes the palm oil reference price used for export duty administration, and Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance publishes the export duty and levy rules that apply under the tariff framework in force. The buyer does not need to calculate these from scratch for every inquiry, but they do affect the price basis behind a firm offer.

Incoterm choice changes what the quote includes. FOB prices cover the cargo at the Indonesian load port under the agreed Incoterms rule. CFR adds ocean freight to the named destination port. CIF adds freight plus marine insurance arranged by the seller. Destination customs duty, local tax, terminal charges after arrival, and inland delivery remain for the buyer unless the contract says otherwise.

For a current quotation, send the destination port, shipment month, quantity, packing preference, and required document set through our contact page. If the formulation or soap intake specification is confidential, you can send only the acceptance limits that the cargo must meet.

Should RBD palm stearin be ordered in bags or bulk vessel?

Choose 25 kg PP bags when your plant needs packaged handling, staged consumption, or warehouse control. Choose bulk vessel when your receiving site has tank storage, heating capacity, and unloading procedures suited to hard palm fractions.

Bagged stearin can suit buyers that dose by batch, distribute to several factories, or lack a dedicated heated tank at discharge. The trade-off is more packaging, more manual or pallet handling, and more warehouse planning. Buyers should confirm pallet requirements, container stuffing details if applicable, and whether the discharge warehouse can keep the product clean and dry.

Bulk vessel supply is more direct for larger industrial intake. It reduces individual bag handling, but it requires the buyer’s receiving site to manage temperature, pumping, shore tank readiness, and discharge timing. Hard fractions need more planning than liquid oils because they may need heating at different points in the logistics chain.

Do not assume that stearin will follow the same route as an olein flexitank programme. Our published stearin routes are 25 kg PP bags or bulk vessel. If your procurement team is comparing logistics formats across palm oil grades, our article on Indonesian palm oil flexitank versus bulk vessel explains how MOQ and cost change by route.

What documents and certifications should be checked before shipment?

Check that the contract, invoice, bill of lading, certificate of analysis, packing record, HS code, and any certification document describe the same product. For RBD palm stearin, document mismatches can create customs delays or factory intake disputes even when the cargo itself is within specification.

The certificate of analysis should show the quality limits used for purchase acceptance. For this grade, buyers normally check FFA, iodine value, melting point, and Lovibond colour. If your receiving laboratory uses a specific method or has a stricter internal limit, it should be written into the purchase specification before the sales contract is closed.

ISO 22000 and Halal BPJPH are available on our RBD Palm Stearin. Food buyers should confirm whether their market requires Halal documentation in the shipment file or only as supplier qualification evidence. Soap and oleochemical buyers may not need the same document package, but they should still align product name, HS code 1511.90, and certificate of analysis wording with their import broker.

EU buyers need an additional compliance screen. Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 lists palm oil under HS 1511 in Annex I, and Regulation (EU) 2024/3234 deferred application to 30 December 2025 for large and medium operators and 30 June 2026 for micro and small operators, as published by the European Union. If your shipment is bound for the EU, review the due diligence position before price negotiation; our EUDR compliance checklist for Indonesian palm oil imports covers the buyer-side checks.

For a broader document sequence, our guide on how to import Indonesian palm oil explains how invoice, bill of lading, certificate of analysis, origin paperwork, and certificates should be matched before shipment.

How does the sourcing process work from inquiry to shipment?

The sourcing process should move from application fit to specification, then MOQ, packing, Incoterm, price, contract, loading, and document review. This order prevents a buyer from negotiating a price for a cargo route that the receiving plant or customs broker cannot accept.

Start with the use case. Margarine and shortening buyers should define the fat blend target, intake limits, and any Halal or food safety file needed by the quality team. Soap buyers should define whether the stearin feeds direct saponification, fatty acid splitting, or another oleochemical route, because that affects the handling and document priorities.

Next, confirm import details with your customs broker. The broker should check HS code treatment, import licence needs, tariff position, food or industrial classification, local language rules if any, and whether pre-arrival documents are needed. We publish HS code 1511.90 for our RBD Palm Stearin, but the importer of record remains responsible for the destination declaration.

Then request an offer using a complete buying line. A workable inquiry reads like this: “300 MT Indonesian RBD Palm Stearin, 25 kg PP bags, CIF Port Klang, shipment in June, Halal BPJPH required, certificate of analysis to show FFA, IV, melting point, and colour.” For bulk vessel, replace the packing and add any shore tank or discharge constraints.

After price agreement, the sales contract should repeat the grade, quantity, packing, Incoterm, shipment window, payment terms, document set, and certification requirement. Before loading, review draft document wording so the final invoice, bill of lading, packing details, and certificate of analysis can be issued without last-minute corrections.

A good stearin purchase is not only a low price per metric ton. It is a cargo that matches the formulation or process, can be received by the plant, clears under the correct documents, and arrives under the Incoterm the buyer’s logistics team planned for.
